THURSDAY . . .

12.10 a.m.

“Bobby.” I hear someone calling me, but they’re far away.

“Bobby,” the voice repeats. Closer now, more urgent.

“Bobby!” This time it triggers my brain, and it rapidly runs through situations that could fit. It hurts too much for me to be on the Merry-Go-Round and I’m not a boy anymore. Then I think maybe I’m back on the road near Father Mucci’s house after that guy knocked me out, but then I remember that’s just a memory, too.

It’s when Pollo adds, “You’re not dead. It’s just a chest wound, you big girl,” that it comes flooding back to me and I open my eyes. I see a ring of faces bending down over me. Pollo. Father Black. Liam Tull.

“Rock salt,” Pollo says as he grins down at me.

“Huh?” I say.

Woozily wondering how it’s possible that I’m still alive.

“The shotgun round you took. It’s not metal shot. They filled it with rock salt. To scare off animals. Couldn’t kill you if they tried. The priests here don’t hold to killing,” Pollo says as he helps me into a sitting position.

“And also, dumbass, you’re wearing a vest,” Pollo continues in a bright tone. “You took the blast up close but that burning you feel is just the salt. It broke the skin here and there but that’s about it. Give or take a few broken ribs, I’d say.”

“Are we good?” I ask, realizing exactly where we are and what we’re doing.

Just before another few gunshots from outside interrupts us.

“They’re still out there. When you got shot they were leaning out to fire at you. I’m pretty sure I got one. But then I had to come over here and take care of you. And I made it across without getting myself shot, too,” Pollo finishes.

“I’m really sorry I shot you, Mr Ress,” Liam Tull says in a worried voice.

“It’s the thought that counts, lad,” Pollo says to him.

“I know you meant well, son,” Father Black says as he lays a hand on Liam’s shoulder.

“That’s okay,” I say as I very slowly get to my feet. It feels like someone dropped a fridge on my chest.

“The call’s gone out. Armed Offender Squad and three choppers are incoming. ETA 10 minutes,” Pollo says as he heads for the wall by the door and starts reloading.

I gingerly move over to the opposite side of the wall and with shaking hands, load in my last mag; 17 bullets and then that’s it.

“They’ve got to know it’s done now,” I say.

“Oh, they’ll know cops are coming. Pulling a stunt like this. Gate crashing, guns blazing. They probably know roughly how much time they’ve got before they get here,” Pollo answers.

“So the question is, how badly do they want in here?” I say.

“Yup. Pretty soon they’re gonna figure it’s time to stop shooting at this doorway from over there. They’re going to make one last push to get in here or they’re going to run,” Pollo says.

“And these guys aren’t going anywhere. That van is fucked and our car is blocking the only road out,” I say.
